Jonathan Toomey este cel mai bun cioplitor in lemn din vale. Dar este intotdeauna posac si morocanos. Zambeste rareori si nu rade niciodata. Nimeni nu stie ca o batista de dantela, o paturica alba de copil si o schita in carbune a unei femei care tine in brate un prunc nou-nascut zac parasite intr-un sertar pe care Jonathan Toomey nu-l mai deschide deloc. Cioplitorul in lemn il privi pe Thomas pe sub sprancene, ridica din umeri si mormai. Thomas se gandi ca asta trebuie sa insemne "da" si continua:
- Asta, la care ciopliti acum, e oaia mea?
Cioplitorul in lemn incuviinta din cap mormaind din nou. Dupa inca o bucata buna de vreme, Thomas sopti:
- Domnule Toomey, iertati-ma, dar nu ciopliti bine oaia mea.
Tacanitul andrelelor vaduvei McDowell inceta. Dalta lui Jonathan Toomey se opri din cioplit. Dar Thomas continua sa vorbeasca:
- E o oaie foarte frumoasa, dragalasa si creata, dar pe oaia mea se vedea ca-i fericita.
- Mofturi, i-o-ntoarse domnul Toomey. Oaia-i oaie. Oile n-au cum sa arate fericite.
- Ba ale mele asa aratau, il contrazise Thomas. Stiau ca sunt cu pruncul Iisus si asta le facea fericite.
