The lowest cost of the licence of the surrogate varies in the several dioceses from 1/. 14s. 6d. in Norwich, to 31. 3s. in Canterbury; the highest charge is 3l. 13s. 6d. The stamps are set down at 12s. 6rf. generally, which is included in the above charge. Under this licence, marriage can be celebrated in less than twenty-four hours.
